Abstract
The aim of the present study is to examine the altitudinal variations in subzero temperatures within the Gavkhoni basin over the period from 1379/1/1 to 1402/12/29, utilizing MODIS product (MOD11A1.6.1). It is necessary to study this issue because a higher subzero isotherm at greater elevations corresponds to reduced snow areas in high-altitude regions, while a lower altitude of frost onset at lower elevations increases the extent of snow-covered areas. To this end, the mean altitude of frost occurence was computed for each month across the spring, summer, autumn, and winter seasons. The results indicate a general upward shift in the 0°C isotherm, i.e., subzero temperatures are migrating to higher elevations. This elevational shift exhibits monthly variability, with December showing the most pronounced rate of increase, wherein the 0°C isotherm migrates approximately 12 meters higher per year. It is plausible that this trend reflects a combination of factors, including global warming and changes in snow cover. Specifically, the reduction of snow cover at high elevations can induce a positive feedback mechanism that further elevates temperatures.
